Ensure your portable generator is ready for every outage with routine maintenance and inspections
Before closing on a home, a generator inspection gives you confidence in the system’s safety and operation.
A break-in service is the essential first maintenance for your new generator after its initial run time. It includes changing the oil and filter, adjusting the valves, inspecting key components, and removing any metal particles that accumulate as engine parts settle.
This service must be performed at 25 hours of run time, immediately following the break-in period. It’s the very first scheduled maintenance to ensure your generator starts strong. Our Smart Start Service accelerates this timeline to ensure your generator is ready to run for up to 200 hours.
The break-in service is critical because during the first 25 hours, the engine’s moving parts wear in and release tiny metal debris into the oil. If this isn’t removed promptly:
Completing the break-in service on time protects your investment and sets your generator up for long-term, dependable operation—ensuring you’re ready when the power goes out.

Smart Start Service is a specialized procedure that fast-tracks your new generator’s break-in process. It involves running the generator under controlled conditions to simulate extended use, allowing the engine to settle properly before an actual power outage.
After Installation:
We run your generator continuously for 25 hours under full home load. This controlled break-in allows the engine to settle, circulate oil, clear metal debris, and form proper seals—while identifying any factory issues early.
Completion of Test Run:
You’ll then switch back to utility power, letting the generator cool down to protect internal parts and prepare it for a thorough inspection.
Break-In Service:
A certified Generac technician performs the critical 25-hour break-in service, including an oil change, valve adjustment, and system inspection. See our service checklist for more details.
